I am often asked about household eczema friendly products and the products I use on my son’s skin to manage his eczema. Honestly, finding the right products really came down to research and just trial and error! Even though neither my husband nor I have eczema, we made lifestyle changes by replacing the products we were accustomed to using to more eczema friendly items to minimize our son’s flares. Parenthood is enough by itself, right? So, we try to keep life as simple as possible. Most of the products we use can be found at your local drugstore or online. If your Itchy Warrior suffers from eczema and allergies, check out our favorite products below.
Body Wash
If you have sensitive skin, you know that it needs special care and how much of a relief it is to find a body wash that does just that. This body wash is specifically formulated for sensitive skin. It is fragrance-free, sulfate-free, dye-free, aluminum-free, hypoallergenic, and paraben-free. Dove Body Wash-Sensitive Skin is a gentle cleanser that removes all the dirt and germs from our active son’s body and nourishes it without drying his skin out. This was extremely important for us because some cleansers would strip his body of its natural oils and leave his skin extremely dry, which triggered flares. Dove Body Wash-Sensitive Skin is our go-to body cleanser and our entire family uses it.
Moisturizers
My Itchy Brown Skin Body Butter
I apply this rich and smooth body butter all over our son’s body and it leaves his skin soft, moisturized, and hydrated. This body butter is made with shea butter, coconut oil, honey, oats, and a selection of essential oils. I actually make this product myself and we use it as our primary moisturizer. Not to mention it makes his skin smell so good after applying!
Alba Botanica Un-Petroleum Multipurpose Jelly
If you like the consistency of Aquaphor, but want to avoid petroleum jelly, this product will do the trick. We have used this product several times as an extra layer on our son’s skin when it is extremely dry, especially in the winter months. This thick cream moisturizes and protects the skin without the use of petroleum. It feels exactly like Aquaphor! It is only made from botanical ingredients such as sunflower seed oil, coconut oil and beeswax. Un-Petroleum has 100% vegetarian ingredients and is fragrance-free, paraben-free, paraffin-free, and has no phthalates, mineral oil, or petrochemicals. After you apply this moisturizer, it leaves the skin super soft and rejuvenated.
Hair Products
This black-owned business is awesome! We use the whole product line on our son. This eczema friendly hair care system is specifically designed for Black and Brown boys. All of their products are vegan, plant-based, phthalate-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free, contains no mineral oil and is silicone-free. The citrus smell also smells soooo good!
Sunscreen
Ok, now I have honestly told EVERYONE about BGS Kids! It is literally the best sunscreen I have ever used. We have it at home, in our travel bag, at our son’s school…EVERYWHERE! My husband and I even use the original Black Girl Sunscreen for adults on our skin. This black-owned business uses all-natural ingredients to protect our beautiful brown skin from the harmful UVA/UVB rays but does not leave that Casper-like white residue left by most sunscreens. But most importantly, what I love the most about this sunscreen is that it is eczema friendly and does not trigger any unwanted flares. Whew!
Insect Repellant
Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent
There is nothing worse than a mosquito bite to trigger an eczema flare and full-on itch fest. Therefore, to protect our son’s skin from mosquito bites, we use the Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent as an alternate to using DEET mosquito spray. Picaridin insect repellants caters to sensitive skin, while DEET mosquito spray tends to cause a reaction on my son’s skin and triggers a flare. This insect repellant has 20% Picaridin and is safe for the entire family, as early as 6 months. Picaridin is just as effective as DEET and is a great alternative for sensitive skin. What I love the most about this spray, besides not causing us an itch fest, is that it is non-greasy, does not damage your clothes, and can last all day for up to 12 hours.
Household Cleaners
Seventh Generation Cleansing Products
The plant-based cleansing products from Seventh Generation are our go-to for household cleaning. The products are scented with essential oils and derived from botanical ingredients. Due to our son’s eczema, we must be cognizant of the harsh chemicals found in cleansing products, as those chemicals can cause a flareup or trigger his allergies. The Seventh Generation cleansing products are dye-free, aluminum-free, and paraben-free.
Laundry
We use the Tide Free and Gentle Pods for the entire family and for all our laundry. I grew up using Tide laundry products, but when our son was diagnosed with eczema, we switched to the Tide Free and Gentle Pods. The Tide Free and Gentle Pods are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and dye-free. They are effective at providing a deep clean to wash out all the stains from an active and growing young boy, while remaining gentle on the skin. Though I miss the “fresh linen” laundry smell I grew up with, I am happy that we are still able to enjoy the Tide brand without worry about our son’s skin.
Over the Counter (OTC) Medicines
As you can see, I absolutely love the Zarbee’s Natural brand! We use their products any time our son suffers from a cough, congestion or mucous build up from a common cold. We even use their multivitamins and elderberry gummies for immune support. Their products are made with natural ingredients like dark honey, elderberry, and agave. The Zarbee’s Natural brand is a great alternative for parents who wish to use natural products, instead of traditional medicine, that are free of drugs, alcohol, gluten, or artificial flavors, sweeteners, and dyes.
Children’s Zyrtec Allergy Syrup
Because our son has pretty significant seasonal allergies, the Children’s Zyrtec Allergy Syrup is our go-to allergy medicine. Each year, pollen wreaks havoc on him, and this year was no different. We previously used a different brand that was not as effective and our Pediatrician and Pediatric Allergist recommended Zyrtec as an alternative. The Children’s Zyrtec Allergy Syrup is dye-free, sugar-free, free of high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, and parabens. Ever since switching to this brand, we are able to survive the Spring seasonal months with his allergies.
