Manuka honey has been a controversial topic on whether it truly benefits those who suffer from eczema or not. For years, some people have raved about the healing properties in Manuka honey as an alternative treatment for eczema. Some research suggest that it may aid in tissue healing from eczema flare ups and may even reduce microbial infections that are associated with the condition, while other researchers say that there’s not enough evidence. Honey has antimicrobial properties, but Manuka honey contains non-hydrogen peroxide. This gives it stronger antibacterial properties than any other honey. However, the use of Manuka honey as an alternative treatment for eczema is still a subject for debate.

Now look, I am no dermatologist or any type of medical professional at all, but I can tell you about my personal experiences with Manuka honey and my son’s eczema. Based on my own personal experience and research, below is what I have learned about the benefits of Manuka honey and eczema….
- Contains antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties
- Can aid in tissue healing from flared skin because it can stimulate macrophages (a type of white blood cell), which removes dead cells and encourages the production of new ones
- Stimulates an inflammatory response, creating a protective barrier between the skin and the environment.
- Minimizes swelling and redness
- Considered a thick emollient that aids in trapping moisture in the skin
Manuka honey can be very expensive. So, if you want to maximize the true benefits of using Manuka honey, be sure to purchase a product that is a genuine medical grade with a Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) label of 10 or more.
As with any product, it is possible to have an allergic reaction. With Manuka honey this is possible, particularly if you’re allergic to bees or pollen. Therefore, it is a good idea to do a patch test before fully embracing the product. Apply the product to an unaffected area of the skin and wait a few minutes to see if redness or irritation occurs.

Also, keep in mind that honey is NOT recommended for infants under 1 year old, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. I hope this information is helpful as you navigate your eczema journey with you and your Itchy little warrior!
